Review Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
Due to an economic boom, China has depleted its oil reserves. When the global recession arrives, millions lose their jobs and are left without a way to obtain the necessary oil. When oil reserves are found on the island of Skira in the Pacific Ocean, China starts a war with Russia over ownership. China colonized it originally, but Russia took the Island from Japan at the end of the Second World War. The United States is called upon to aid in the recapture of Skira to quell the conflict. The characters you play are Second Lieutenant Mulholland and Sergeant Hunter in different roles in 11 missions over the course of 5 days.

The character movements are practical and fitting of the genre. Dropping down into prone position and rising again takes time, as it would in a real world situation. While going up steep inclines you will find yourself unable to run and you will notice that you walk a bit more slowly. When your view wobbles, you see your free hand reach to brace yourself and this head-bobbing becomes more severe while crawling or running. Those susceptible to motion sickness may want to steer clear of this game altogether.
The realism continues with the ballistics that are impressive and the guns that are molded after real world counterparts. The weapon animations must have been done using real soldiers or people who knew what they were doing. One example is the loading of an anti-tank weapon which is first placed on the ground instead of being held up by a free hand. There are numerous add-ons such as thermal-imaging scopes and grenade launchers. You can also call for support from the barrages of mortar and artillery as well as air strikers.

The realism ends with the missions you must complete. You are forced through the game play by the use of timers and you must save the day in every scenario. It is nothing close to realistic modern warfare. There is an absence of strategy in the game that can be overcome by player skill. You can be free to ignore the tactical parts and become a Rambo as long as you can accurately gauge bullet-drops and can shoot accurately to get some good headshots in. There is an extensive array of weaponry available, but you will almost never have the need to use the knife or the pistol and you won’t find yourself using much that doesn’t have a scope.
